CANMORE – A woman in her 30s was taken to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary with serious injuries after a motor vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway outside of Canmore on Thursday (March 14).
Police and paramedics responded to a collision between a Toyota Corolla and a semi-truck on the eastbound lane of the Trans-Canada Highway at about 7:30 p.m., said Cpl. Gina Slaney, RCMP southern Alberta media relations officer.
Paramedics said the driver of the Toyota was first taken to Canmore General Hospital and then airlifted by STARS air ambulance to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary.
“We transported one single occupant driver from the car initially to Canmore hospital. … Then was able to use Canmore hospital as a more controlled landing zone for STARS and the patient was ultimately transferred to Foothills [Medical Centre] in serious and potentially life-threatening condition as a result of injuries in the collision,” said Stuart Brideaux, an Alberta Health Services public education officer.
“They required extrication from the vehicle prior to being able to move over to Canmore hospital.”
There were no other injuries in the collision, Brideaux said.
Blake Robert, a communications officer with STARS air ambulance, said a helicopter was sent to Canmore General Hospital at about 8 p.m. Thursday. Once they arrived, they took the person to Calgary.
“STARS transported the patient, a female in her 30s, from Canmore to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary,” he said.
