Two crew members at Calgary's water main break site were injured at the worksite over night, resulting in an immediate safety stop of work, according to a morning update on June 13.
The injured individuals, a city employee and a contract employee, were taken to hospital for medical care but neither were reported to be in critical condition.
While work on the pipe was halted, safety inspections are able to continue, Calgary officials said.
A team is working with Occupational health and safety (OHS) and work is not expected to resume until later this afternoon, said Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek.
Gondek urged Calgarians and those in surrounding communities to do more in water conservation. She said as of this morning, June 13, the City does not have enough of a cushion in its water supply for emergencies.
Yesterday's water consumption rose by nine million litres, she said.
Calgary, Airdrie, and surrounding areas remain under a level four outdoor water restriction.
DO NOT:
- Water lawns, gardens, trees, shrubs and flowers by any method other than rain water.
- Wash down any outdoor surfaces, including exterior building surfaces, windows, sidewalks, driveways, or walkways of any sort unless your business requires to for health and safety reasons.
- Wash cars on driveways or streets.
- Fill outdoor decorative features, fountains, pools, or hot tubs.
- Use potable water for construction purposes such as grading, compaction, or dust control.
Airdrie also urges residents to voluntarily cut back on indoor water usage.
