When Bowden staff learned of the forced closure of the Didsbury arenas, curlink rink, they checked the condenser in the Igloo

The only recent equipment upgrades to the Town of Bowden's arena was a new boiler costing about $12,000.

BOWDEN — The condenser leak that forced the closure of the Didsbury arenas and curling rink in December spurred Town of Bowden staff to check theirs, but no problem was found, the town's mayor says.

During an interview with the Albertan, Robb Stuart was asked if staff checked out the Igloo condenser for leaks after the leak in the Didsbury Memorial Complex was discovered last month.

“We keep a really close eye on ours. I’ve got to give our staff really good credit,” he said confirming that is was checked.

Didsbury is now renting a temporary condenser. That will enable it to reopen its main rink on or before Feb. 1. However, the leisure ice and curling rink ice at the complex will not be re-installed using the rental unit, due to a lack power capacity.

“Of course, with Didsbury losing their arena, we tried to help them as much as we can, but our ice time was booked (heavily). I don't know if they managed to get some in or not,” Stuart said.

Stuart said the fact Bowden didn’t have the same issue is a credit to town staff.

“I keep wondering why we spend so much money in the arena, but it's just the cost to keep it going, right?

“It runs non-stop from the time it starts up. I don't know how people, communities that run their ice all summer, keep it going,” he said.

“We did have to put a new boiler in the arena, which was about $12,000 but ongoing maintenance, right? That's just day to day stuff, more or less. The arena is in good shape.”
