CARSTAIRS – An illustrated storybook telling the tale of Wildhorse Jack and Alberta’s first-ever Stampede pancake breakfast has earned a Carstairs-area publisher another notch in their proverbial cap.

During a gala in Edmonton on Tuesday, Sept. 24, the Book Publishers Association of Alberta announced the winners of the 2024 Alberta Book Publishing Awards, which celebrate the essential role book publishers in the province play in supporting authors and telling Alberta’s story.

Among them was Carstairs-area publisher Red Barn Books, whose colourfully and uniquely stylized recounting of the history behind the inaugural Stampede breakfast called Flip Flop Flapjack: Wildhorse Jack and the First Stampede Breakfast was named the Children’s and Young Adult Book of the Year.

The tale inspired by the bigger-than-life figure of ‘Wildhorse’ Jack Morton was written by his granddaughter and Calgary-based author Brenda Joyce Leahy with illustrations by artist Melissa Bruglemans-LaBelle.

The awards gala was hosted at the Varscona Theatre in Edmonton on Tuesday, Sept. 24 with delegates from across Canada gathering to celebrate the Alberta book publishing industry.

A total of 16 awards were presented and we would like to congratulate all of the winning and shortlisted publishers, authors, and designers.
