CARSTAIRS - Town council has approved an update to the Town of Carstairs Transportation of Dangerous Goods Route Bylaw to bring it up to date with current provincial legislation, including new regulations for placards.

The move came by way of motion at the recent regularly scheduled council meeting.

“It’s an update to reflect changes to the act,” said chief administrative officer Rick Blair. “There are now things that need to be in there, including regarding placards.”

The updated bylaw’s placard quantities section now reads: “A consignment of dangerous goods in a quantity that requires a placard or placards pursuant to the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations or an intermediate bulk container displaying labels pursuant to Section 4.15.3(c) of the Transportation of Dangerous goods Regulations.”

Also under the updated bylaw, “a carrier shall, when requested to do so by a peace officer, produce for such officer’s inspection, shipping documents showing the description of all consignments of dangerous goods being transported, unless such shipping documents are not required when exempted by the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations.”

The bylaw’s definition of peace officer was also expanded to not only include RCMP officers, but also bylaw officers and community peace officers.

During the recent council meeting, council also approved a declaration marking June 3-9 as Seniors Weeks 2024, “in honour of the past, present and future contributions of the seniors of this community and throughout Alberta.”
