Three firefighters from Carstairs and one from Didsbury have travelled up north to help with the Jasper wildfire response.

Senior Didsbury firefighter Brennan Tippe, Carstairs Fire Department Chief Jordan Schafer, Carstairs lieutenant Kyle Paulson and Carstairs firefighter Austin Harding left Wednesday night.

Alberta Emergency Management made a call-out Wednesday to municipal fire departments across the province calling for help with the Jasper emergency.

“It’s one of those things, when the call comes out we go,” Didsbury Fire Department Chief Curtis Mousseau told the Albertan. “We want to help out when we can.”

The men travelled up in a Carstairs Fire Department fire truck.

The four firefighters will be in Jasper until Saturday and then a decision will be made on whether to swap them out with four others from the local departments, he said.

“It will all depend on the conditions up in Jasper, whether they come home or whether we do a crew swap,” he said.

Despite the export of local firefighters, the Didsbury and Carstairs departments remain fully capable of responding to any and all calls in the district, he said.
