CARSTAIRS - The public hearing for the proposed borrowing of $1.6 million for the new Carstairs fire hall is scheduled to take place starting at 6 p.m. on May 25.
The total cost of the project has been pegged at $4 million, with Mountain View County contributing $2 million and the Town of Carstairs contributing $2 million, including $400,000 from reserves.
“We are hoping people will come to the hearing,” said Town of Carstairs Mayor Lance Colby, noting the new fire hall is an important project for the municipality.
Council has already given first reading to Borrowing Bylaw No. 2016 Fire Hall Construction. The hearing will being held at the town office and on Zoom.
If approved, the $1.6 million loan would be for a period of 15 years and would come from Alberta Capital Finance Authority or another authorized financial institution by the issuance of debentures and on terms and conditions outlined in the bylaw.
The Carstairs and District Department Building Committee, a partnership between the Town of Carstairs and Mountain View County, is overseeing the new $4 million fire hall, to be located on Mandalay Boulevard on the town’s east side.
The project will see the town and county split costs on a 50/50 basis.
Following the May 25 public hearing, council could vote on second and third reading at the May 26 council meeting, said Colby.
“If there is nothing that arises that would cause any concerns that we would have to look at, it would go to third reading then,” said Colby.
Two other public hearings are also scheduled for May 25, for Land Use Bylaw No. 2007 amended - direct control district, and for Land Use Re-designation Bylaw 2015 - The Homestead Development.
