CARSTAIRS - Carstairs firefighter Josh Van Arnam and his curling teammates are back in Alberta after taking bronze at recent Canadian Fire Fighters Curling Association nationals championships in Prince Edward Island.
A lifelong Carstairs resident, Van Arnam (third) and his teammates Scott Jordan (skip), Cory Campbell (second) and Richard Brunner (lead) played together for the first time at the 2023 provincials in Hanna.
The team qualified for nationals after winning the provincial title in January.
A paid, on-call firefighter in Carstairs, Van Arnam, 43, has been curling since childhood.
The bronze medal win in P.E.I. was a great experience, both for the term and personally, he said.
“It was definitely the highlight of my curling career,” Van Arnam told the Albertan. “It was a phenomenal experience for our team, especially since it was our first year together.”
The team went 6-3 in the round robin before defeating Manitoba and then falling to British Columbia to take the bronze.
The prestigious CFFCA national championships took place in P.E.I. from March 23 to April 2.
Van Arnam says the team is already talking about competing in the 2024 provincials, which are scheduled to be held in Olds in January.
