CARSTAIRS – The Hugh Sutherland High School north gymnasium was filled to capacity with family members, friends and other supporters for the recent 2023 graduation celebration.

In all, 69 graduates were recognized and honoured on June 23 during an evening cap and gown ceremony. Individual academic awards and scholarships were presented to graduates.

Dignitaries at the event included Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills MLA Nathan Cooper, Carstairs mayor Lance Colby, Mountain View County councillor Dwayne Fulton, Chinook’s Edge School Division associate superintendent Jason Drent and Chinook’s Edge trustee Melissa Copley. A message from Red Deer-Mountain View MP Earl Dreeshen was also presented.

Grayson Dumont is the 2023 graduating class valedictorian.

“Today serves as the moment we step towards the rest of our lives, our future endeavours, and every challenge, big and small, that we face,” said Dumont. “Each and every one of us has a unique experience within this school and will leave footprints of our experiences among the history of our school’s halls.

“To all the graduates here, we have finished the first major step in our lives. From here on in, we will begin new individual journeys that will define our lives. With all of our talents, we all have such amazing potential for greatness.

“This greatness does not have to be fame or fortune. Define your own meanings of greatness. Don’t get put off by the success of others and focus on yourself.”

He thanked the many teachers who taught his classmates over the years.

“You’ve inspired us and motivated us to work hard for our dreams,” he said.

Mayor Colby, a retired police officer, told the graduates that finding future careers may take time, but it will all be worthwhile.

“I spent the next 11 years (after his graduation) at various jobs until I finally found a career I knew I would enjoy,” said Colby. “I hope it doesn’t take any of you 11 years to find that career you really enjoy. Do not be afraid to try different jobs and never give up on yourself and your dreams.

“With hard work and determination, you can achieve your goals.”
