Carstairs, Olds players selected in Western Hockey League draft

Vancouver Giants and Tri-City Americans acquire Central Alberta hockey players

CARSTAIRS - Two area hockey players are getting their start in the Western Hockey League (WHL) after Thursday’s 2024 WHL Prospects Draft.

The Tri-City Americans took centre Crew Martinson of Olds in the second round. The 2023-24 Red Deer U15 AAA Rebels player was the 24th player chosen.

The Vancouver Giants took Carstairs player Brock Dingman in the sixth round, 121st overall. The defenceman also played with the Red Deer U15 AAA Rebels in the 2023-24 season.

In total, 237 players were selected by WHL member clubs, including 130 forwards, 84 defencemen, and 23 goaltenders.

Alberta led all provincial branches with 94 players selected.

A total of 54 players from B.C. were chosen, with another 45 players coming from Saskatchewan. Manitoba saw 33 players selected. Thursday’s proceedings saw eight players selected from the United States, following on the heels of 44 American-born players taken in the 2024 WHL U.S. Priority Draft on Wednesday.
