CARSTAIRS - The Carstairs Rodeo Association will be putting on the Beef & Barley - Bulls and Broncs roughstock event in town on July 17, town councillors were told June 28.
Association president Tyler Franke appeared before council as a delegation, outlining plans for the event, to be held at the rodeo grounds in south Carstairs.
The plan is to have bull riding (10 contestants), junior bull riding (10 contestants), steer riding (six contestants), wild pony racing (10 teams of local kids), saddle bronc riding (10 contestants), free-style bullfighting, and ranch bronc riding, he said.
“We have hand-picked all our contestants as this is an invitational only event,” said Franke.
The plan is to pre-sell 500 tickets, with organizers not intending to sell tickets at the gate, he said.
“Our goal is to bring in spectators from our community for Beef & Barley Days,” he said. “Only people with pre-purchased tickets will be allowed entry into the event on that day which helps control numbers.”
The event is expected to start at 6:30 p.m., with gates opening at 5 p.m.
“We have bleacher seating for 750 people as well as the large area on the east side for lawn chair seating,” he said. “We have many local sponsors that want to take part in our event, we will also have an area blocked off for sponsor seating where they can sit within their cohorts at picnic tables.
“Our beer gardens area will be made larger, but our 200-person capacity will stay the same to ensure social distancing can be maintained.”
Several councillors applauded organizers for planning the July 17 event.
Councillors accepted Franke’s presentation as information and directed administration to work with organizers on the project.
