CARSTAIRS - The Carstairs Skating Club (CSC) hosted its largest-ever Annual Icefest Synchronized Skating Club Competition last weekend.

Held all day Saturday at the Carstairs Memorial Arena, the competition featured 305 skaters in 28 teams from B.C., Saskatchewan and Alberta.

The skaters ranged in age from seven years old to adults.

The Carstairs Skating Club is home of the Onyx Ice Synchronized Skating Teams.

The Carstairs Star 8 team came in 4th place in its category, the Star 6 team came in 6th place in its category, and the Star 4 team came in 4th place in its category.

CSC officials were very pleased with the competition and all the spectators who came out to watch and cheer on the skaters.

“The organizers were very happy with the event. We had a full crowd for the entire day, it was very loud with lots of cheering and excitement,” said Onyx Ice Star 8 team manager Jamie Fuhriman.

“Gail Schwartz is our club president, she is the main organizer of the event, along with board member Tera Glass, these two worked countless hours throughout the year to make Icefest such a tremendous success, and of course many volunteers from our club aided in keeping the day running smoothly too, it wouldn't be possible without our many volunteers.”

The coaches of all 3 Onyx Ice Teams are Charlsey Whittemore and Callie Manko.

As for team 8 manager Fuhriman, she said, “I am honoured to have this role as it is a totally different experience getting to be right there with them rink side, and behind the scenes, experiencing the highs and the lows in the moment as it's happening.”
