CARSTAIRS - Two weeks after winning its second Canadian U18 national championship in two years, the curling team skipped by Carstairs’ Myla Plett has won the U18 silver medal at the Canada Winter Games.

The team is made up of Plett, third Alyssa Nedohin, second Chloe Fediuk and lead Allie Iskiw, and coached by Blair Lenton and David Nedohin.

Enroute to the goal medal game on Feb. 24, the squad beat Yukon 9-2, Manitoba 6-4, P.E.I. 6-5, lost to Nova Scotia 4-7, and defeated New Brunswick 7-4 in the round robin.

In the quarter-finals the squad beat Ontario 6-3, Quebec 7-3 in the semifinal before falling to Nova Scotia in the final 9-5.

“Canada Winter Games was such an amazing experience,” Plett told the Albertan. “Having an opportunity to be part of Team Alberta and hang out with athletes from all over the country is something I will never forget. It was such fun.”

She said her team really came together as the Games progressed.

“We pulled out a couple close games in the round robin but then we started to play really well in the playoffs,” she said.

“Nova Scotia was amazing in the final. It wasn’t my best game unfortunately, but that’s sports. I am super proud of our silver medal and all we have accomplished this year.

“P.E.I. was amazing. I had never been there before and I definitely loved it.”

The team will now be taking a week off after some very busy recent times, she said.

“We will be training hard and building up towards U-20 Nationals at the end of March,” she said. “We are really looking forward to seeing how we can do in the higher age category at the national level and it looks like the venue in Quebec will be great so I’m really excited about that.”

The U20 national championship is in Rouny-Noranda, Quebec March 2 to April 2.

Myla Plett is a Grade 12 student at Olds Koinonia Christian School.
