CARSTAIRS - The Carstairs’ Hugh Sutherland School community and the community-at-large have come together with the local Tim Hortons to raised thousands of dollars for the family of a student who recently passed away unexpectedly.

Following the student’s death, the graduating class of 2022 decided to organize a fundraiser for the student’s family to help support funeral and other costs.

Educational assistant Monica Gibson helped spearheaded the effort to engage the larger community in the fundraising effort.

Gibson approached the local Tim Hortons, where the student had worked, and suggested a donut sale be held.

Posters were created and displayed throughout the community, with students helping with pre-orders.

As part of the effort, blank coffee cup sleeves were purchased. A group of Grade 12 students and staff members wrote messages of encouragement and positive affirmations on almost 400 sleeves.

On Jan. 26 the fundraiser took place at the Tim Hortons, with over 1,700 donuts sold, raising almost $8,000.

“Facing the loss of a student, friend and community member, I decided to put my heart into work I knew would reconnect people with what they needed the most in these beginning moments of grief,” said Gibson.
