CARSTAIRS — Council has approved a change to the town’s rates and fee bylaw section regarding metering of some residences.
The move came by way of motion at the recent council meeting, held in person and on Zoom.
The bylaw sets out rates for metered single-occupancy properties, metered multiple-occupancy residences, bulk water sales and sales of water meters and readouts.
The change approved last week was to the flat rates portion of the bylaw, and particularly for unmetered occupancy properties.
The updated bylaw now states: “For residential dwellings in which a water meter is not installed, the monthly charge shall be a fixed charge of $14 per month plus a consumption fee charge based on 13 cubic metres of usage.”
It also now states: “For commercial buildings in which a water metres is not installed, the monthly charge shall be based upon similar commercial properties, plus a fixed charge of $14 per month.”
The amendment also saw the removal a provision that stated: “For buildings in which a water meter is not installed the monthly charge shall be $50 per month for each unit within the building.”
The bylaw’s wastewater rates and the garbage collection and disposal rates remain unchanged.
Town hall use donated for Regimental Ball
Meanwhile, councillors have OK’d the use of the Carstairs Community Hall for a proposed Regimental Ball being planned by the Didsbury RCMP detachment, which includes the Carstairs area.
“In anticipation of Carstairs entering into a municipal policing agreement in the coming year, we are excited to host this event in Carstairs to promote visibility of our organization in the community and overall good community relations,” detachment commander Staff Sgt. Stephen Browne said in a letter to council. Regimental Ball Planning committee member Cassandra McCormack also signed the letter.
Proceeds from the Regimental Ball will be donated to the Chinook’s Arch Victim’s Services Society, a non-profit organization that operates as a police-based program and provides varying levels of support to victims of crime within the community.
“The ultimate goal of CAVSS is to lessen the impact of crime and tragedy on victims and provide vital resources to individuals in times of need,” they said.
“Naturally it is our goal to donate as much of the funds brought in as possible to directly to CAVSS and to keep the costs of the event low.”
Council agreed to have the town donate the use of the hall for the Regimental Ball, which is tentatively planned for Sept. 24.
