CARSTAIRS - The recent annual Winter Classic Shoot at the Silver Willow Sporting Club outside Carstairs was a hit again this year, with about 200 toys and cash with a value of about $4,000 brought in.

“Silver Willow annually requests their members bring an unwrapped toy for a boy or girl for the local Christmas hampers,” said owner Gwen Day. “This fantastic gathering in of toys was done by the members and the Calgary firefighters, who bring out toys that they gather in Calgary. Several of the firefighters are long-standing members at Silver Willow.”

Despite the pandemic, the club was able to continue to offer competitions like the Winter Classic by hosting the participants at a staggered start time, with no gathering for prizes and no meals provided.

“Social distancing was adhered to and a couple of hours of outdoor fun was had by all in the lovely warm winter weather,” she said.

The Carstairs Lions Club gathered up the toys and distributed them as part of its annual Christmas hamper program, she said.
