CARSTAIRS - The curling team skipped by Carstairs’ Myla Plett is continuing its winning ways this season, capturing the U18 provincial championships earlier this month in Cochrane and competing in U20 provincials in Ellerslie this weekend.
If the team finishes first or second there it will qualify for U20 Nationals in Rouny-Noranda, Quebec March 26 to April 2.
Now in its second session together, the team is skip Plett, 17, third Alyssa Nedohin, 17, from Sherwood Park, second Chloe Fediuk, 16, from Edmonton, and new lead Allie Iskiw, 16, from Ellerslie.
Airdrie's Blair Lenton is the team’s coach, while David Nedohin from Sherwood Park is assistant coach.
The Plett team won the Canadian U18 championships in Oakville, Ontario in May 2022.
This season, as well as winning the provincials on Jan. 6, the team has qualified for the Canada Winter Games. They will be heading to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on Feb. 17 for that competition, which officially takes place Feb. 19-25.
Before heading to Prince Edward Island, the team will be travelling to U18 nationals in Timmins, Ontario on Feb. 3, with the competition running from Feb. 5 to 11.
Plett, a Grade 12 student at Carstairs’ Hugh Sutherland School, says she is very pleased with how her team is performing this season.
“Our work ethic makes all the difference,” Plett told the Albertan. “We all have the same goals and we put in the work to get as far as we can. We put in the training and practise to build our skills.
“And we get along very well and support each other, and that is a great attribute to have on a team.”
Having now played together as a team for two seasons has been invaluable, she said.
“It’s definitely great to have a team you know you can count on. You get to know your teammates and become more like family, like sisters. We know how to build each other up.”
The team is playing at a high level right now, which bodes well for the upcoming events, she said.
“With the work we’ve put in, we are pretty confident that we will do well and continue the success we have had so far this year,” she said.
Plett and her teammates have discussed future plans – and they have agreed to shoot nice and high.
“Our whole team is aiming for Scotties and Olympic levels,” she said.
