CARSTAIRS — A large and previously out-of-control grass fire south of town has been extinguished without any homes or other buildings being damaged, Mayor Lance Colby told the Albertan on Friday (Sept. 2) shortly after 4 p.m.
The fire had been threatening homes in south Carstairs as well as the immediate surrounding rural area at about 3 p.m., with firefighters from the town and neighbouring communities called to the scene.
As a precautionary measure, the municipality had set up a command centre and also opened the community hall.
However, the command centre was subsequently shut down shortly after 4 p.m. and fire crews have been stood down, the mayor said.
