Update: Highway 2 southbound lanes east of Carstairs now open after collision involving snow plow

RCMP say road conditions remain poor and travel in the area of a collision on Highway 2 earlier today near Carstairs is not advised

CARSTAIRS - One person was injured in the collision on Highway 2 near the Carstairs overpass earlier today.

The collision scene near Highway 581 on Tuesday has been cleared and traffic has resumed, according to an RCMP update issued at 6:22 p.m.

"One person has sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries as a result of the collision," RCMP said in the update.

While traffic has resumed, RCMP warned "road conditions remain poor and travel in the area is not advised at this time."

RCMP asked travellers to avoid Highway 2 east of Carstairs on the afternoon of Tuesday, Feb. 28 after a serious motor vehicle collision resulted in the closure of southbound lanes.  

At  2:17 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28,  RCMP issued a statement confirming Alberta RCMP Traffic – Airdrie members were currently on scene at a serious motor vehicle collision in the southbound lanes of Highway 2, near Highway 581.

"Emergency crews will be on scene for some time. Please avoid the area," said RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney, a media relations officer, in the early afternoon statement.

The collision was between a pickup truck and a snow plow, said RCMP.

Traffic was be diverted onto Highway 581. RCMP said traffic could not drive southbound on Highway 2 at this location for the afternoon.

511 Alberta posted an earlier statement at 2:07 p.m., adding motorists should expect major delays.

Meanwhile, 511 Alberta reported at 1:33 p.m. today that a spun-out semi on Highway 2 south of Innisfail had been cleared. The traveller service issued a statement at 11:52 a.m. that said to expect a lane closure and delay near the scene.
