If you are looking for an amazing winter experience that many would consider a bucket list item, then ice skating on Lake Louise is a must.
Lake Louise is the perfect place for outdoor skating. It’s a world famous destination, nestled in a pristine location and surrounded by snowy peaked mountains and glaciers. Lake Louise, starting as early as mid-December becomes a natural ice rink with a thick layer of ice that is maintained by Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise staff. Ideal for leisure skating, the ice is professionally prepared to the point where even figure skaters could use it. Off to the side there is a secondary, smaller rink that includes hockey nets if you are interested in a game or two.
Don’t have any skates? You can rent some from the Alpine Social Rentals shop on the lower level of the Fairmont hotel. Lake Louise offers several amenities not too far from the rink but staying at Fairmont Chateau gives you the lakefront experience.
One of the most magical experiences you can have skating on the lake is skating under the stars. The rink doesn’t close when the sun goes down, instead it is lit for the night so you can enjoy the brisk mountain air while gazing up at the stars. This is great for a romantic evening. When you start to get cold, there are campfires nearby to warm you up. Enjoy some marshmallows and just sit there and take in the pristine and tranquil sights of the area.
Time your skating excursion to coincide with the annual Ice Magic Festival. Each January, ice sculpture artists from all over the world participate in a massive ice-carving competition. You’ll get to see exquisite artwork sculpted from 136 kg blocks of ice, as well as explore ice castles and ice bars. If you can’t make it for the festival itself, the ice carvings remain for the rest of the season.
If you are looking for a new experience this winter with friends or family, then be sure try ice skating on Lake Louise. It’s more than a spin around the ice. It’s a true Albertan adventure.
