CREMONA – Alberta Municipal Affairs Minister Ric McIver is reportedly considering options following the resignation of the Cremona's mayor as well as two councillors that has left the municipality without quorum.

“When a municipal council loses quorum, the remaining members of council do not have the legislative authority to make decisions or take any action,” Heather Jenkins, press secretary for the minister’s office, told the Albertan by email in response to questions.

“Therefore, council cannot fulfil its responsibility to provide direction and consider the welfare and interests of the municipality,” wrote Jenkins.

Earlier last week, the village’s chief administrative officer Karen O’Connor had confirmed that now-former mayor Tim Hagen as well as former deputy mayor Joe Canaday and Coun. Jody Dick had submitted written resignations on Aug. 13 and Aug. 20.

Remaining on council, which is essentially now defunct, were councillors Shane Goebel and Autumn Schmidt.

“The minister is currently considering his options to respond to Cremona’s situation,” said Jenkins.

“As soon as a decision is made, residents can expect to receive a letter from the minister apprising them of the next steps.”
