CREMONA - Cremona School Grade 7 student Claire Friesen received a bronze medal in the junior category at a recent Canada-wide science fair in Edmonton.
She placed Best of Fair among students in grades 7 to 12 during the Central Alberta Science Fair to qualify for the Edmonton fair.
Her exhibit was titled ‘The Way it flows – Laminar vs Turbulent’.
She said her project was inspired by her love of aviation, including the fact her father is a commercial pilot.
“I have long been interested in aviation, and I felt this project would be an exciting way to expand my knowledge of the field,” said Friesen, 13.
Her project involved building a wind tunnel, where she tested three aerofoils: double-wedged, symmetrical and under-cambered.
In the end she concluded that the more symmetrical an aerofoil is, the less turbulence it will create; the more symmetrical the better.
Since she is in Grade 7, Friesen will not be moving her science fair project to another level.
“I am not old enough to enter internationals, so this is the end of the line,” she said.
