CREMONA - Mountain View County council has reviewed 2023 Cremona & District Recreation Board funding approvals totalling $250,900.
The update came during the recent regularly scheduled county council meeting.
The board distributes funding on behalf of Mountain View County due to the high percentage of rural residents in that area, council heard.
“The board is responsible for ensuring that quality of life opportunities are available to residents of the county, within the Cremona recreation district, through the development, management and support of recreational and cultural services,” county chief administrative officer Jeff Holmes said in a briefing note to council.
The board approved 2023 funding on a $88.91 per capita basis for Cremona and Water Valley groups and organizations.
Funding approved in 2023 includes $43,000 to the Cremona & District Ag Society, $20,000 for the Cremona & District Aggie Days, $25,000 for the Cremona Community Hall for insurance, utilities, hot water system, $20,000 to the Cremona Library for summer reading, books, DVDs and storage, and $14,000 to the Water Valley Arts and Wellness for renovations, upgrades and maintenance.
Other approvals included $12,000 for the Water Valley Community Association for the Celtic Festival, nature trail, playgrounds and sound system, $18,500 fro the Water Valley Public Library for various programs, and $9,000 for Cremona Minor Baseball Association for equipment purchases, diamond maintenance and improvements.
Council passed a motion accepting the report on the funding allocations as information.
Top student citizens awarded
In other news from the recent council meeting, council approved the 2023 Mountain View County Citizenship Award recipients from various area schools.
The awards are handed out (each with a $1,000 scholarship) to students who were judged on a variety of criteria: good attitude towards school and community; extra-curricular activities; enthusiasm and initiative; volunteer work; leadership qualities; and maintaining good academic standing in high school.
The 2023 winner are Liam Good from Carstairs’ Hugh Sutherland School, Sheridan Whitlow from Cremona School, Shiloh Etmanski from Didsbury High, Declan Jones from Olds Koinonia Christian School, and Elizabeth Thompson from Olds High School. The Sundre High School recipient will be announced at a future date.
