Unofficial list of candidates running in Cremona byelection announced

Two contenders seeking mayor’s seat while five others vie for two councillor positions
cremona news

CREMONA – With the deadline now passed to submit nominations for the Village of Cremona's upcoming byelection, seven candidates have thrown their names in the proverbial hat.

Two of them – Robert Reid and Lawrence (Larry) Steeves – are seeking the mayor’s seat.

The other five – Banu (Bonnie) Akkus, Derald Anderson, Andy Lacey, Christina Liu, and Eric Martin – are vying for two of the open councillor seats.

The deadline to submit nominations was noon on Monday, Oct. 28.

Candidates still have a 24-hour period following the nomination deadline to for whatever reason withdraw, and as such the list remains unofficial until Tuesday.

The byelection itself is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 25.

The village council was left without quorum and thus the legislative authority to make any decisions following three resignations in August that started the byelection process.

The minister of Municipal Affairs had appointed an administrator to conduct Cremona’s council duties in the meantime so the municipality could continue its business.

The nomination and byelection dates had initially been set to occur earlier on Oct. 7 and Nov. 4 respectively but ended up be rescheduled when election act requirements for advertising were not met.
