DIDSBURY - Town council has instructed administration to arrange a meeting with RCMP officials regarding the possibility of forming a formal regional police advisory committee among area municipalities.

The move came by way of motion at a recent, regularly-scheduled council meeting.

“Following discussion with our regional partners and with Didsbury RCMP detachment commander about exploring the possibility of creating a formal regional policing advisory committee structure, (the Town of Didsbury) would like to invite RCMP K Division to present information on policing advisory committees,” said Ethan Gorner, the Town of Didsbury's chief administrative officer.

“Invitations to our regional partners will be extended to Cremona, Carstairs, Sundre, Mountain View County, and Olds and administrators to attend the presentation.”

An informal policing advisory committee made up of area municipalities was created in 2010. Since that time the Town of Didsbury has entered into a municipal policing services agreement with the RCMP, and all municipalities in Alberta are now responsible to pay for policing, not only this with populations over 5,000.

On Feb. 22, the Town of Didsbury council passed a second motion putting that committee on hold pending the meeting with K Division officials.

The Town of Olds has its own policing advisory committee.
