DIDSBURY - Local residents and others have donated more than $2,000 to the Wild Rose Humane Society shelter in honour of the late Betty White.
“It’s a wonderful post-Christmas gift,” said volunteer treasurer Mark Fournier.
White was a renowned actress and activist who championed animal rights during her long career. She passed away in December at age 99.
Following her death, a world-wide social media campaign got underway, with people encouraged to donate to their local animal shelter in her memory.
Donations of all sizes have been coming into the Didsbury shelter since that time, he said.
“We’ve had donations of $5, $10, $20, even a $100 donation,” he said.
The donated funds will be used to help cover a recent spike in heating costs at the Didsbury animal shelter, he said.
“When I opened up the gas bill last month, it was quite a shock,” he said. “These donations are going to help keep the animals warm.”
