DIDSBURY - Town councillor Joyce McCoy has submitted her resignation from Didsbury council effective immediately, officials said Tuesday.

McCoy, a second-term councillor, submitted her letter of resignation to the Town of Didsbury's chief administrative officer Ethan Gorner, who announced the news at Monday’s council meeting.

McCoy, who did not attend the Sept. 23 meeting, was first elected in 2013 and re-elected in 2021.

Under the provincial Municipal Government Act, if a councillor resignation occur within 18 months of a general election, holding a by-election is discretionary.

The next municipal election is scheduled for October 2025.

On Oct. 8, council will discuss whether to order a byelection be held, Gorner said.

In the meantime, council will continue to sit with a mayor and five councillors.

“On behalf of council, I thank councillor McCoy for her service to the community and we wish her all the best,” Town of Didsbury Mayor Rhonda Hunter said in a press release.

The Albertan has reached out to McCoy for comment.
