DIDSBURY — Town council has been given an update on the municipality’s community grant program, with allocations totalling more than $30,000 approved for more than a dozen local organizations.
Among those receiving funds was the Didsbury Figure Staking Club, which received $2,000 for subsidizing registration fees to encourage new participants.
In his monthly report to council, Ethan Gorner, chief administrative officer, outlined those groups receiving funding and amounts given out, as well as one group the requested but did not receive funds.
The Didsbury and District Chamber of Commerce received $1,825 for the County Christmas event, the Didsbury Aqua-Jets received $2,000 to help replace the diving block, the Didsbury Library received $2,000 for the North Pole event, the Mountain View Colts received $2,000 to offset transportation costs, and Hope for MVC Kids received $1,000 for ‘Be Kind’ gala tickets for donation to families.
Other organizations receiving funds include the Wildrose Humane Society, which was granted $2,000 for upgrades to the outdoor dog run at the Didsbury facility, and the Make a Wheel Difference event in conjunction with the Zion Church.
The Olds/Carstairs gymnastics club applied for $2,000 to purchase iPads for member sign-in in Olds/Carstairs locations. That request was denied because it did not directly benefit Didsbury residents and/or community.
In October, the town’s community services department put out a call for additional applications to the Didsbury community grant program.
As a result, three additional groups received $1,000 each.
They are the Didsbury Minor Hockey Association for assistance with tournament and athlete development programs, the Friends of the Didsbury High School to assist with costumes and sets for the drama department, as well as the Mountain View Community Adult Learning Society for assistance with technology updates to support employment services, ESL programs and other services.
