DIDSBURY – Town council has approved funding for a podcast focusing on the town’s past and present.
The move came by way of motion at the recent regularly scheduled council meeting, held by teleconference.
A podcast is a digital audio file that can be accessed on a computer or mobile device. Once it is posted, the podcast remains up indefinitely, allowing it to be accessed any time.
The podcast will be produced by Craig Baird, with Canadian History EHx, and will include interviews with notable citizens.
In a letter received by council, Baird said, “I am starting a new series on my podcast that will centre on the histories of small towns in the Prairies.
“Towns in the Prairies have amazing histories that go back a century or more in many cases. From the people who founded the community to the notable names and events in that community’s history, there is a story to tell.”
He noted that the episode would include the community’s history, things to do in the area, and interviews with the mayor and other notable residents.
The podcast will cost $250 and will range in length from between 15 and 40 minutes.
“I’m in favour of this,” said Coun. Dorothy Moore.
Coun. Bill Windsor said the Didsbury museum is currently doing a series of videos on Didsbury’s history and he called for the $250 to go to that project.
“They (museum) are doing a tremendous job,” said Windsor.
Mayor Rhonda Hunter called the podcast sponsorship a good investment.
Coun. John Baswick also called the sponsorship worthwhile.
“There is an advantage to us,” said Baswick.
Councillors passed the motion approving podcast sponsorship.
The sponsorship funds will come from the county community engagement budget.
