DIDSBURY - The arrest of a man at a local hotel for allegedly breaching bail conditions led to the arrest of two others in a separate drug trafficking investigation at the same hotel.
RCMP released information tonight about police presence at a local hotel last weekend.
During the arrest of a man at the hotel on April 22 for allegedly breaching conditions of his release from judicial custody, Didsbury RCMP entered into a separate investigation at the same hotel involving drug trafficking, police said in a release issued on the evening of April 27.
RCMP did not disclose the name of the hotel.
On Saturday, April 22, the release states Didsbury RCMP conducted a compliance check at the hotel on the 37 year-old man who is charged with the alleged sexual assault of a female youth while threatening to use a firearm, police said.
“While effecting the arrest of Aaron Saville, officers entered into an unrelated investigation regarding individuals trafficking methamphetamine from another room at the same hotel,” the release states.
A day later at approximately 5 a.m., police said officers executed a search warrant at the hotel and arrested two people.
Police say 35-year-old Cody Desjarlais, of Edmonton, had an outstanding arrest warrant from Mayerthorpe. Michelle Schmidt, 43, of Red Deer, had an outstanding arrest warrant from Edmonton and five outstanding arrest warrants from Red Deer.
“Officers located approximately 20 grams of what is believed to be methamphetamine inside the hotel room,” police said.
Schmidt was charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and was remanded into custody.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and further charges are pending.
Schmidt’s next court appearance is May 1.
Meanwhile, Saville – whom the Didsbury RCMP was originally checking up on – had a judicial interim release hearing before the courts on the same day the search warrant in the second investigation was executed at the hotel.
Saville was released on April 23 on conditions to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Didsbury on May 15.
Saville had previously been released March 10 on conditions by the Provincial Court of Saskatchewan when Didsbury RCMP arrested him.
