DIDSBURY - The Didsbury and District Historical Society is spearheading a number of activities on June 4 and 5 in recognition of Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee, officials said.
The society owns and operates the Didsbury Museum. Society president Rick Astle says recognizing the 70th anniversary of Her Majesty’s reign is fitting and worthy of celebration.
“She is the head of state and that is great accomplishment to be on the throne for 70 years,” said Astle. “As Canadians we are indebted to Her Majesty for everything she has done for our country, and in helping preserve the history of the people who settled and resettled this nation.”
In recognition of the historic milestone, the museum has prepared an exhibit of the Royal Family and has expanded it in honour of the Queen’s jubilee, along with paying recognition to Didsbury’s namesake in Didsbury, Manchester, England, he said.
The society has partnered with Didsbury Municipal Library to host a family fun games day at the Moose Fence Park just west of the museum on June 4.
The following day the museum will host an afternoon tea in three sittings.
“The menu is designed with Queen Elizabeth in mind,” said museum manager Dawn Stewart.
The tea will include some of the monarch’s reported favourite dishes, including cucumber sandwiches, egg and cress sandwiches, smoked salmon tea sandwiches, scones with cream, gourmet jams and seasons fresh fruit cups.
“We are able to offer this for free thanks to the generosity of the Canadian Heritage and the talented chefs at Prairie Whistle Food Co.,” Steward said.
Visitors to the museum will be encouraged to make use of the commemorative benches and picnic tables in the museum’s garden.
“The weekend gives the (historical society) a unique opportunity to showcase our facilities, including an entire room dedicated to the Mountain View Model Railroad Club and our Outdoor Garden Train,” said Astle.
Society officials updated town council on the Jubilee plans during the May 10 council meeting.
