DIDSBURY - Didsbury Museum officials are very excited to be allowed to welcome in-person guests at the facility starting on June 15, said Rick Astle, seven-term president of the Didsbury and District Historical Society (DDHS).
Under Stage 2 of the provincial re-opening plan, museums are permitted to have in-person visitors starting Thursday, June 10.
However, Didsbury Museum officials decided to wait a couple days before re-opening tomorrow.
Located at 2110 - 21 Ave., the Didsbury Museum is owned and operated by the DDHS. The multi-storey facility includes a school room, medical room, general store, military room, as well as many other displays highlighting local and area history.
Lots of upgrades and changes have been made at the museum in recent months, with guests sure to be impressed, he said.
“The people who look after our displays have been working hard on upgrading and changing around some of our displays,” said Astle. “There is lots to see and lots of great upgrades. It’s fresh and new, and there’s no question that we are looking for visitors.”
One new display area highlights the town’s ever-growing reputation as a prime location for film and TV production, he said.
“We have a wall display covering all of the movie industry stuff that’s been done in Didsbury,” he said. “We have lots of the posters.”
Changes have been made to many display areas, he said.
“A member of the model railroad club has been working on the layout upstairs and expanded the garden railroad a bit outside,” he said. “The ag and sports areas are the last areas we are dealing with.”
When the museum re-opens there will be COVID-19 prevention safety measures in place, including social distancing and capacity limits, he noted.
In other museum news, the DDHS has recently been approached with the donation of a radio-controlled model Supermarine Spitfire aircraft, he said.
“It will ultimately be hanging in our military room,” he said. “We don’t know exactly when that will happen.”
The Didsbury Museum’s motto is PRIDE: Preserve, Research, Interpret, Develop and Exhibit.
Other museums in the district are also making plans to re-open to in-person visitors starting on June 10.
