DIDSBURY - Town council has approved the official naming of the park outside the Didsbury Memorial Complex.
The move came by way of motion at the Oct. 24 council meeting, with the new name being Jets Park.
The park includes a playground, pathway, ball diamond and skatepark located on the grounds of the complex.
The name was chosen from proposed names submitted by the public under the Name That Park! Contest with the names Jets Park and The Hive voted on at the 2023 Showcase Didsbury event.
Local boy Dominic Loch put forward the winning name. During the Oct. 24 council meeting, council officially thanked Loch for his suggestion, presenting him with a certificate and a backpack.
Mayor Rhonda Hunter explained that the Jets softball team played in town starting in the 1960s, playing on a diamond located on 19th Street then moving to the current diamond outside the Memorial Complex.
“The new park name is a real tribute to the ball team’s history and our town,” said Hunter. “The Jets were a well-respected team. The league folded in the mid-'90s but connections and friendships made through the sport are everlasting.
“The new park name will ensure that the history is not lost. It will help connect people today and into the future with the ball diamond, the playground, the skatepark and walking path, being people together to support recreation.”
