Leap of Kindness Day coming

Didsbury chamber has ideas on what to do with extra day this year

DIDSBURY - With 2020 being a leap year, we all get an extra day this year. So what will you do will your extra day on Feb. 29?

DIDSBURY - The Didsbury and District Chamber of Commerce is celebrating Leap of Kindness Day on Feb. 29 this year.

The idea is simply to do something kind for someone else.

Diana Steer, executive director of the chamber, said the chamber has already reached and been in contact with several non-profit groups in town.

“We already have three non-profits that have given us their wishes,” said Steer.

Steer said Leap of Kindness Day started four years ago in Saratoga County, Florida when the chamber of commerce there started it.

“In that year they had 50 chambers across 30 states take it up,” she said. “This year I saw this and thought that would be a great initiative for Didsbury. We have so many caring, volunteering-type individuals here. This is something I’m sure they’d ‘leap’ on.”

Steer has posted what each non-profit would like on the chamber’s website (didsburychamber.ca).

“Every time a non-profit sends me what their ask is I post it on the website,” she said. “It has a contact name, a contact number, sometimes a contact email, so you can contact them directly and make arrangements.”

So far the Didsbury Municipal Library, Mountain View Food Bank and Didsbury Sk8park Society have signed up and their asks can be seen on the chamber site.

Steer is hoping that the event catches on and become something that the chamber does every four years.

“What are you going to do with that extra day?” she said. “One of the examples (from four years ago) was an elementary school made breakfast for first responders. So they contacted them and said can we bring you breakfast and they made arrangements.”

Any groups interested in joining in and signing up, or individuals or businesses interested in helping out can check out the Didsbury and District Chamber of Commerce website or Facebook page, or email [email protected].
