DIDSBURY - The Mountainview Colts are in Okotoks Friday taking on the current first place team in the south division of the Heritage Junior Hockey League.
Going into the game, the north division Didsbury-based team has 21 points so far in the season compared to the Carstar Okotoks Bisons' 36 points.
The Colts last game played was on Dec. 2, beating Airdrie Techmation Thunder 4-3 at the Didsbury Memorial Complex.
Forward Aidan Saunders got two goals, including the game winner, against the Thunder.
The Colts got goals from Wyatt Bailey (assist Haiden Parks), Saunders (assists Jay Heistad and Kai Biggin), Zane Labbe (assists Tanner Austin and captain Paton Rothenbusch) and Saunders (assists Bailey and Corbin Ray).
Jordan McGinnis stopped 13 of 16 shots.
The Colts played the Rams in Rocky Mountain House the previous night, getting goals from Cohen Richardson (assists Parks and Blake Stoddard), Rothenbusch (assists Richardson and Parks), Richardson (assist Parks), and Heistad (assists Tanner Austin and Rothenbusch).
The Rams won the game in the shootout, giving the Colts one point.
Kyle Allan stopped 30 of 34 shots.
Coach Dan Visser called the weekend a success.
“It was nice to get three out of a possible four points,” said Visser. “I do not think we have had the puck luck we deserve. Letting these teams hang around in games that we are dominating will eventually cost us.
“We need to capitalize on our chances more so we don’t get into or limit those tight games.”
The Colts’ Heritage Junior B Hockey League 2023-24 season record now stands at 8-8-5 for 21 points, putting the team in third place behind first-place Sylvan Lake and second-place Rocky.
The Colts are in Okotoks against the Bisons this Friday, followed by another road game against the Strathmore Wheatland Kings on Saturday.
“We have a tough weekend coming up with two very good teams,” said Visser. “We will prepare this week with some good practices and see where it takes us.”
The Mountainview Colts are back home against the Rocky Rams on Dec. 15.
