DIDSBURY - Students were kept in their classrooms for a short period Tuesday afternoon as police dealt with an incident in town, according to Didsbury RCMP detachment commander Staff Sgt. Stephen Browne.
“We had an ongoing operation which resulted in me putting all Didsbury schools in a secure and hold,” Browne told the Albertan. “There was no threat to the schools or the student body. I just didn’t want them exposed to the operation, which had the potential of becoming dangerous.”
Laurette Woodward, spokesperson for Chinook’s Edge School Division, said school staff followed RCMP direction on a brief hold and secure procedure in all three of the division's Didsbury schools.
“Students were held in their classrooms for a short period of time before being released to buses or home for the day,” she said.
A notice was sent out to Didsbury parents following the incident, she said.
“The RCMP incident did not occur on school property at any one of our three schools,” she said.
“We do appreciate the high standard of care that RCMP demonstrated. Please know that for our RCMP partners and for Chinook’s Edge School Division that safety is always our top priority.”
Browne said a media release was expected to be issued by Southern Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit.
