DIDSBURY - First-term town Didsbury councillor Ethan Williams has resigned from council to pursue a career opportunity in British Columbia.
At the opening of the Nov. 26 council meeting, Town of Didsbury's chief administrative officer Ethan Gorner told council Williams’ letter of resignation had been received and accepted.
“In accordance with section 161 of the Municipal Government Act, I announced that that I have received as of Nov. 20th the resignation from council of our friend councillor Ethan Williams,” said Gorner.
“He wrote a very nice letter and his professional opportunities have taken him to British Columbia.”
Mayor Rhonda Hunter said, “All the best to councillor Williams.”
Under the Municipal Government Act and the Local Authorities Election Act council has an option to call a byelection to replace Williams.
During the Nov. 26 council meeting, a motion to hold a byelection on March 20, 2025 to replace Williams was defeated, with the mayor and all councillors voting against.
“I think we have a proper number for quorum,” said deputy mayor Curt Engel.
Five council members remain on the seven-member council.
Council also defeated an earlier motion calling for a byelection to replace former councillor Joyce McCoy, who resigned in September.
Ethan Williams could not immediately be reached for comment.
