DIDSBURY - Residents of Aspen Ridge Lodge seniors home in Didsbury were joined by elected officials and other supporters during a celebration held Monday to mark the facility’s 20th anniversary.

The celebration event included a birthday cake, comments from local and provincial elected officials and entertainment.

Opened in 2004, Aspen Ridge is one of several seniors lodges owned and operated by Mountain View Seniors' Housing (MVSH).

During Monday’s event, Didsbury mayor Rhonda Hunter commended the staff who have worked at the facility over the years.

“It’s such a good feeling to know that all our seniors have a real home here and are looked after so very well,” Hunter said in a prepared statement in a release from MVSH.

“Didsbury is fortunate to be part of MVSH and to have Aspen Ridge in our community, providing a kind, caring and compassionate environment for all who have the opportunity to be here.”

Stacey Stilling, chief administrative officer with MVSH, said, “What truly makes Aspen special is the community created by all the team members who choose to work here. Without these amazing people, none of this works.”

Over the past two decades, more than 110,000 activities engaging residents have been held at the lodge. As well, more than 1.2 million meals have been served to residents and more than 32,000 hours of maintenance has been conducted.

James Nibourg, president of the Alberta Seniors and Community Housing Association presented a commemorative certificate to the lodge in recognition of the 20th anniversary.

“Many people are forced to leave town to go to seniors housing. I really believe it’s important to stay in our home community. This is your home, and we celebrate that opportunity today,” Nibourg said.

MVSH board chairman and Mountain View County Deputy Reeve Dwayne Fulton and Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills MLA Nathan Copper were also in attendance.

“This milestone is a testament to the dedication of our staff and everyone who works here, including our operations and maintenance crew that keep everything running smoothly,” said Fulton.

MLA Cooper called Aspen Ridge Lodge a “huge part of making our community strong.”

Elvis tribute artist Will Reeb entertained residents and guests.

Aspen Ridge Lodge is located at 1100 - 20th Avenue in Didsbury.
