DIDSBURY - Motorists can expect possible detours in and around a major construction project set to get underway this spring at the intersection of Highway 582 and 23rd Street near Shantz Village in the town’s northwest, officials said.
The intersection upgrade is being funded jointly by Alberta Transportation and the Town of Didsbury, with each contributing $750,000.
The work is being undertaken to accommodate projected traffic increases at the location and will include widening the road and adding new turning lanes in all directions.
The changes will improve traffic flow and make accessing the Shantz Village commercial and residential area easier and faster, says mayor Rhonda Hunter.
“It is a much needed upgrade and will help secure during development the area, as well as make the intersection safer for vehicle and pedestrian traffic,” Hunter said in a recent press release.
The public tender for the work is expected in coming weeks, with construction commencing this spring, Craig Fox, director of engineering and infrastructure with the Town of Didsbury, said in the same release.
The intersection upgrade comes after several traffic impact assessments were completed by the municipality and Alberta Transportation.
The town’s portion of the cost will be covered by grants, said Hunter.
