DIDSBURY – The planned grand opening of the new Didsbury skatepark has been postponed in response to newly instituted COVID-19 restrictions introduced by the province this week, officials announced yesterday (Sept. 16).
Following a closed-door special council meeting, council decided to postpone events scheduled for the Didsbury Memorial Complex, including the skatepark ribbon cutting origainally planned for Sept. 18, until a future date.
Saturday’s event was also to include a grand re-opening event for the complex itself, which has undergone a major renovation project.
“Council does not take lightly making the decision to cancel this weekend of celebration for our community,” said Town of Didsbury Mayor Rhonda Hunter. “We know there are many community members who have been looking forward to the weekend’s events, to the grand openings and community reconnection, to the return of Showcase Didsbury.
“We do want to ensure everyone that the event will be rescheduled as soon as possible, and that the celebration will be worth the wait,” she said.
Saturday’s scheduled Mountain View Colts hockey game at the complex will still take place, but will not be free of charge as originally planned, she said.
