DIDSBURY — The Mountain View Arts Society (MVAS) has announced plans to present a series of what organizers are calling celebrated art and creativity in the district.

“Being artistic and creative is a great way to stay mentally active, especially during these challenging times,” officials said in a press release.

The Summer Art Blast will involve a host of events in July, all adhering to Alberta Health guidelines for physical distancing and other COVID-19 prevention measures.

Events outlined in the release include the following:

• Art in the Park — Scheduled for July 18 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., the event will be an open invitation for artistically minded people to gather informally in the Didsbury Memorial Park to draw, play music, or share some time in person discussing creative pursuits.

• Stained Glass Open House — Scheduled for July 18 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the event will be hosted by the people from Unique Stained Glass Works and will include demonstrations, in-studio specials, as well as free, one-hour classes.

• Sharing Our Creativity — The society will invite people of all ages to submit pictures, video or scanned examples of their completed art, crafts or other creations. All original work will be accepted, and there is no limit on what might be considered ‘art.’

• River of Rocks — The society will provide directions on how to paint river rocks and will collect completed rocks to develop an artistic river within a public area of the community.

• Go Fly a Kite — The society will provide directions on how to put together and decorate a kite that can be flown and enjoyed on a breezy summer day.

• Chalk It Up — The society has directions on how to make homemade sidewalk chalk. Using this chalk or the store-bought variety, people can decorate some fun artwork for their neighbourhoods.

Meanwhile, society officials say the annual Mountain View Arts Festival remains scheduled for Sept. 12-13, with more details to be released in the coming weeks.
