DIDSBURY - An application has been made with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 417 for staff at the Town of Didsbury, say officials.

The application, received by the local on Sept. 5, is for certification for a unit of all employees except firefighters, with an estimated unit of 59 employees.

The application was published on its website by the Alberta Labour Relations Board in its latest application for union certification update.

Municipal workers in the Town of Didsbury are currently not unionized.

If the ALRB approves the application, a certification vote by the employees would be held to determine if the workers will unionize.

Town of Didsbury chief administrative officer Ethan Gorner told the Albertan, “We have been notified by the Labour Relations Board that an application has been made by CUPE to certify a portion of our staff to be their exclusive bargaining agent. It is before the board and no decision has been made as of yet.”

CUPE Local 417 did not immediately return a call seeking more information.
