At Save-On-Foods, going the extra mile is nothing new. Actually, we’ve gone above and beyond in all areas of our business since we started, way back in 1915. Originally, we were called Overwaitea Food Group because of the founder’s practice of selling 18 ounces of tea for the price of 16, and the name “overweight tea” stuck. Fast forward over 100 years and that name has changed, but we’re still known for delivering extra value to our customers. Today our company is best known for its most prominent banner—Save-On-Foods—but also includes PriceSmart Foods, Urban Fare and Bulkley Valley Wholesale.
It all started in 1976 at the local Overwaitea Foods in Cranbrook, B.C., where Darrell Jones got his start bagging groceries after school. After learning the ropes of the grocery business in 23 different communities, Darrell made the leap and became President of Save-On-Foods in 2012.
Save-On-Foods is known for customizing its stores to best suit the needs of the neighbourhoods in which they operate. In each community, we listen to locals and provide the services they’re looking for. Save-On-Foods supports Western Canadian food producers by carrying more than 2,500 locally-made products from more than 2,000 local growers and producers.
Supporting local communities is the foundation of the Save-On-Foods brand. Combined with our supplier partners, team members and generous customers, Save-On-Foods has donated more than $30 million to children’s hospitals, and contributes $3 million in donations to food banks across Western Canada each year. Save-On-Foods is committed to Going the Extra Mile for our neighbours in every community we serve, every day.
