The third Sawka to play for the Oilers has saddled up to a Broncos commitment.

Second-year Okotoks Oilers forward Hunter Sawka has committed to the NCAA Division 1 Western Michigan Broncos, the team announced on Dec. 5.

"We're thrilled as a staff for Hunter and the entire Sawka family," said Oilers head coach and GM Tyler Deis, in a team release. "Hunter has grown by leaps and bounds since coming to our team last year. He's always been a player who sees the ice extremely well, but as he's grown, he's continued to develop into a guy who makes everyone around him better as well.

"Western Michigan is getting a player with great skill and the character to succeed at that level, and we couldn't be happier for him."

The play-making winger has registered 34 points in 26 games, good for second on the Oilers, and sits 13th in the Alberta Junior Hockey League with 22 assists.

The 2005-born forward played last season with older brother Parker, a three-year goalie with Okotoks before graduating from the program. Tanner, a defenceman, started the Sawka trend with the Jr. A organization as a steady blueliner from 2018-21.

Sawka, from Cochrane, joins Oilers leading scorer Sam Huck as Broncos commits and becomes the ninth player on the roster with an NCAA Division 1 commitment.

Western Michigan, based in Kalamazoo, play in the highly-competitive National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) against the likes of North Dakota, Denver, St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth.
