The Portage College Voyageurs mens's hockey team dropped their two games against the league-leading NAIT Ooks over the weekend. The Voyageurs lost 4-1 on Friday and 6-4 in the Saturday rematch.
It's been a tough season in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC), so far. The losses have kept the Voyageurs in the basement of the seven-team league.
Xavier Halterman, assisted by Shaye Sommerfeld, scored the Voyageurs' only goal of Friday’s away game. Voyageurs' netminder Luke Hall faced 42 shots in the loss. NAIT's fourth goal was an empty-netter in the final minute of the game. Portage shooters managed 28 shots on the Ooks net.
The afternoon rematch on Remembrance Day at the Bold Center saw a better offensive attack from Portage, firing 46 shots onto the NAIT net. Voyageurs' goalscorers were Logan Carruthers, Mikal Chalifoux, Xavier Halterman and Shaye Sommerfeld.
The weekend losses leave the Voyageurs with a record of eight-straight losses in their first eight games of the season. The team has just one point - earned from an overtime loss - and sites 22 points back of the top-spot Ooks who improved their record to 8-2 with the weekend wins.
The Voyageurs are on the road Friday, Nov. 17 to play the sixth place Concordia Thunder. The second game of the home and home stand is at the Bold Center on Saturday. That game starts at 7 p.m.
Admission to Voyageur games is free.
