Voyageurs set to host SAIT after Kings losses

Voyageurs drop to to Red Deer and reload for weekend home stand with SAIT

LAC LA BICHE - Following a two-week break, the Portage College Voyageurs men’s hockey team was back on the ice this weekend. The Voyageurs dropped both away games to the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings, losing 7-1 in a Friday night matchup and 3-2 on Saturday.

Shaye Sommerfeld, with the assistance of Blake Astorino and Xavier Halterman, scored the team’s only goal in Friday’s game. Luke Hall and Alex Brousseau, who tended the Voyageurs’ net during Friday’s contest, managed 31 saves between them.

On Saturday, the Kings were up 3-0 going into the second before Voyageurs’ forward Mikal Chalifoux netted the Voyageurs’ first goal. The score remained at 3-1 until Xavier Halterman got the puck past Kings’ goaltender Evan Fradette in the third period. But that’s all the Voyageurs could muster by the final buzzer.

It’s been a tough season in the Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference so far for the Voyageurs. The team lost four of its last games played and currently sits in the basement of its seven-team division.

The Voyageurs are back home this weekend to face off against the visiting SAIT Trojans, who presently hold fifth place in the division standings.
