WESTLOCK — The Westlock U18 Warriors hockey team are set to play in the finale of the Gord Smith Memorial Midget Tournament this afternoon, Dec. 3, starting at around 3:15 p.m. in the Westlock Rotary Spirit Centre.
The Gord Smith Memorial Tournament — named for a former organizer of the annual event and a lifelong supporter of minor sports in the Westlock area — kicked off on Dec. 1 with a game between Westlock and the Sturgeon Mustangs. The Warriors won that game handily 8-1.
On the evening of Dec. 2, the Westlock Warriors took on the CR Knights and scored a 10-3 victory.
That put them into the semi-final against Spruce Grove on the morning of Dec. 3. Despite some stiffer opposition, the Warriors won that match 5-2.
Their opponent in the championship final will be Camrose, who defeated Glenlake in the other semi-final on Sunday morning by a score of 2-1.
Further results from the tournament will appear in the Dec. 5 print edition of the Town & Country This Week, as well as online.
Incidentally, it should be noted that all the teams participating in the tournament helped collect donations for the Westlock Food Bank. Collectively, they brought in 1,667 lbs of donated food, with the biggest contributor being the Glenlake Minor Hockey Club with a haul of 873 lbs.
