There’s something about sportsmanship, a little health competition, the greasy food, and endless entertainment that we can’t get enough of. Also, who doesn’t love an opportunity to wear cowboy boots? If you’re ready to boot-scoot the summer away, we’ve got just the thing.
While the Calgary Stampede often steals the spotlight, plenty of other rodeos across the province offer just as much excitement. Maybe more! Here’s a roundup of some of the best rodeos to check out this summer.
The Calgary Stampede
We’d be silly not to include it. Let’s start with the Granddaddy of them all: The Calgary Stampede. Known as “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth,” this 10-day extravaganza, held July 5th-14th, is a whirlwind of rodeo action, Stampede evening shows, live music, carnival rides, and pancake breakfasts galore. It’s an event like no other, drawing in crowds worldwide to enjoy its iconic parade, thrilling chuck wagon races, and world-class rodeo events. The Calgary Stampede is the most well-known rodeo in Canada and is crowded, rowdy, and full-on country. Even the city slickers are two-stepping it up in their freshly polished boots. If you can brave the crowds, the Calgary Stampede is an experience worth enjoying at least once in your lifetime.
But hey, maybe the Stampede’s big city appeal and large crowds just aren’t your thing. Or perhaps you’ve been there, done that, and you’re looking for something different. You’re in luck! Alberta is bursting with fantastic rodeo events throughout the summer, each with its charm and flavour. Let’s saddle up and explore some of the best ones around.
Teepee Creek Stampede
First up, we’re heading to Teepee Creek Stampede July 11th-14th, northeast of Grande Prairie, on the Teepee Creek Rodeo Grounds. This wild gem of a rodeo has been around for over a century, is rooted deep in history, and offers an authentic and close-knit community feel. It’s the perfect spot to experience real cowboy culture and get down and dirty in cowboy spirit. The Pro Rodeo events are top-notch, featuring everything from bull riding to barrel racing, with plenty of family-friendly activities in the mix. The vibe is fun and welcoming, making it a great choice for both rodeo veterans and rookies alike.
Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede
Next on our list is the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede from July 24th-27th. Established in 1887, this rodeo is known for its warm, hospitable energy. It’s a true crowd-pleaser. You’ll find all the classic Pro Rodeo events here, but what sets this rodeo apart are the extra touches: nightly concerts, a parade, and a fantastic midway with rides and games. Plus, there’s a great food scene with plenty of local vendors serving up delicious eats.
Camrose Big Valley Jamboree: Bulls for Breakfast
It's not your typical rodeo, but it's well worth mentioning. Big Valley Jamboree is a 30-year and counting, proud Alberta tradition. This country music festival, held August 1-4th, runs alongside the famous “Bulls for Breakfast” event. Kick the morning off with a thrilling bull riding competition, followed by four days of live music performances by some of North America’s top country music artists. It’s the perfect blend of adrenaline and entertainment, all set in the pretty countryside of Camrose.
Strathmore Stampede
From August 2-5th, the Strathmore Stampede takes center stage. This event is famous for its action-packed schedule featuring rodeo events and its famous “Running With The Bulls” event, where cowboys show off their bravery. It’s one of the few places in North America where you can experience this Spanish tradition. Strathmore Stampede offers a blend of excitement and community spirit, complete with a Cowboy Cabaret, making it a must-visit on your rodeo circuit.
Valleyview Crocus Hill Stampede
We’re heading back up north for the Valleyview Crocus Hill Stampede held August 9th-11th. A smaller rodeo, yet no less thrilling, Crocus Hill Stampede offers a full slate of rodeo competitions and a focus on local talent. It’s a fantastic way to check out some of the rising stars in the rodeo world and enjoy a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere.
Calgary Police Rodeo
For a one-day event that packs a punch, don’t miss out on the Calgary Police Rodeo on August 10th. This unique rodeo is organized by local law enforcement and features police officers competing in traditional rodeo events. It’s a fun twist on the usual rodeo, complete with a wrap-up old-school barn dance, with all proceeds going to charity. Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo
Nestled in the scenic foothills of southern Alberta, the Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo held August 15-18th is a great opportunity to check out the thrill of the rodeo. Cochrane Lions Club Rodeo
Held over the September long weekend, the Cochrane Lions Club Rodeo from August 30 to September 2nd is a wonderful way to wrap up the last long weekend of summer.
