A group of 40 people will be lacing up their skates and hitting the ice this Saturday for a 24-hour hockey game.
“We have 60 people so far signed up and that includes volunteers,” said organizer Trevor Jenner. “We’re just over the 40 mark for players and are looking for more.”
The 24-hour hockey game at the Penhold Multiplex is in support of the Kids Cancer Foundation.
Interested players are asked to get a pledge form and raise at minimum, $20. Jenner said this is the first year the event has run in Penhold, and he hopes it continues into the future.
“Kids are the next generation,” said Jenner of why he’s focused on raising money for the Kids Cancer Foundation.
“There are kids who go through this and they know they can make it through because they’re determined. With their determination and our help we don’t want 50 per cent of kids to make it, we want 100 per cent.”
Jenner’s nephew was three years old when diagnosed with leukemia. His nephew is now in remission, and Jenner said he was motivated to give something back.
“The Kids Cancer Foundation did an amazing job for us and I know they can do a lot for others.”
Playing will go right through the night, and Jenner is looking for anyone 14 years and older to come out and play. He’s also hoping for more volunteers to sign on to help. A silent auction and 50/50 draw will also be held during the night. He said every hour and a half the ice will be flooded to keep the surface in good condition. The doors will be open all night for spectators to come out and watch, and cheer on.
