Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning this morning for the central area of the province that includes Innisfail and Bowden while caution is being urged for travel on portions of Highway 2.
Heavy snowfall with total amounts of 10-20 centimetres is expected today, March 20, the alert, issued at 7:08 a.m., stated.
Snowfall has begun in west central Alberta, and will move eastward throughout the day.
The snow is expected to be wet, heavy and will briefly be mixed with rain or freezing rain this morning.
Snowfall will end late this afternoon in central Alberta, and late this evening in eastern Alberta.
“Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Take frequent breaks and avoid strain when clearing snow,” the Environment Canada warning stated.
Meanwhile, travel is not recommended on Highway 2 (Queen Elizabeth II) and other highways in the Ponoka area, according to 511 Alberta, the province’s traveller information service, operated by the Government of Alberta.
“Avoid non-essential travel until conditions improve,” stated the 511 Alberta warning issued at 7:34 a.m.
Highway 2 conditions between Bowden and Red Deer were listed as covered in snow with poor visability around 8 a.m.
Highway 2 south of Bowden to the Carstairs interchange was listed as bare, but partly covered in snow going further south to Calgary.
